Alkmaar, a short train trip north from Amsterdam, is famous for its cheese market, which is held every Friday from Easter till September. The market commences at 10 am, but if you want a good view, be there at least an hour earlier. Once the market is up and running, crowds surround the market-place, beside the waag, ten and more deep: the place is mobbed.
