Madurodam was opened in 1952 (in The Hague) as a war memorial commemorating the life of resistance fighter George Maduro who died in Dachau in 1945. Madurodam now supports charities which benefit young people. Madurodam presents The Netherlands in miniature (1/25 scale), and the majority of the buildings are models of actual constructions in various Dutch cities.
